IT students earn global recognition at 10th Huawei ICT Competition in China

Eight UR students have demonstrated Rwanda’s growing excellence in digital innovation after securing top awards at the Global Final of the 10th Huawei ICT Competition held in Shenzhen, China.

Competing against 177 teams from 49 countries, the students emerged among the world’s best after progressing through highly competitive national and regional rounds. This year’s competition attracted more than 220,000 students from over 2,000 higher learning institutions across more than 100 countries and regions, making it the largest edition since the competition was launched.

Representing Rwanda were eight University of Rwanda students alongside one student from Rwanda Polytechnic–Tumba College. The participants competed in three categories—Network Track, Cloud Track, and Computing Track.

The Network Track team, comprising two Computer Engineering students and one Information Technology student from the University of Rwanda, achieved the competition’s highest distinction by winning the First Prize.

The Cloud Track and Computing Track teams also delivered outstanding performances, each earning Second Prize globally while securing First Place in Africa in their respective categories.
For the students, the achievement reflects not only months of preparation but also Rwanda’s growing capacity to compete in advanced digital technologies on the international stage.

Gad Anaclet Irumva, a third-year Computer Engineering student and a member of the winning Network Track team, described the competition as a life-changing experience that strengthened their confidence and demonstrated the quality of ICT education in Rwanda.

"The Huawei ICT Competition gave us a global experience that showed us we are capable. It proved that Rwandan students can compete and win on the world stage with the support of our institutions. This is a powerful experience we want to share ; to encourage others to be open, step forward, and seize every opportunity," said Irumva.

The Huawei ICT Competition provides students with an international platform to apply their technical knowledge to real-world challenges while strengthening practical and problem-solving skills. Through collaboration with universities worldwide, the competition equips participants with competencies required by the rapidly evolving digital economy and promotes innovation, teamwork, and technological excellence.
