UR & KSU relations gain momentum with the creation of Kent State University Centre in Rwanda

The University of Rwanda (UR) and Kent State University (KSU) held an inauguration ceremony of Kent State University Centre. The creation of the Centre builds on existing collaboration in the areas of peace and conflict studies under the Centre of Conflict Management of UR and the School of Peace & Conflict Studies of KSU. The event was presided over by Hon. Dr Valentine Uwamariya, the Minister of Education.

In her opening remarks, the Minister of Education expressed her satisfaction for “tremendous milestone” between UR and KSU for having sustained their partnership that culminated into the creation of KSU centre in Rwanda. Dr Uwamariya is convinced that the operations of Kent State University in Rwanda will continue to pave way for collaborations that are directly relevant to the economic development of Rwanda.

“We hope to see many Rwandans and Africans gain from great experience and knowledge of an esteemed academic institution such as Kent State University” She said

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Didas Kayihura, the University of Rwanda Vice chancellor commended KSU for its deliberate decision to establish a Centre on Rwandan soil which came from the existing strong collaboration between both sister institutions.

“This will no doubt take mutual business to even higher levels, as fast as we intend,” stated Dr Kayihura, adding that many initiatives including new program in Aerospace Engineering program, and other joint programs in Peace and Conflict Studies ; will be beneficial to Rwandans and beyond.

Professor Marcello Fantoni, KSU Vice-President of Global Education noted that Kent State University decided to be part of this partnership with the University of Rwanda because they firmly believe that they can bring a humble contribution to the broader vision for this country.

“The choice for Rwanda was intention and deliberate. We knew that this is a country where we want to be and we found the perfect match in the University of Rwanda” noted Fantoni.

Despite having centres in different countries across the world this is the 1st time in which Kent State University establishes a centre in Africa. Prof Fantoni informed that his University wants to be part of a project that could see them as protagonist along with the major institutions in education in the country. The Centre will see both institutions develop joint programs in Peace and Conflict Studies, Aerospace Engineering while boosting cultural, academic and research exchange among students and staff.
