SHORT COURSES IN ENGLISH

The University of Rwanda (UR) is an English medium higher learning institution. In order to strengthen proficiency in the English language, the UR created a centre known as the Centre for Language Enhancement (CLE). This centre offers courses in Academic English to both undergraduate and post-graduate students. In the context of community engagement, one the three core missions of the UR, the CLE is planning to offer short courses in languages to the community both inside and outside the UR. Such courses will be offered in French, Kinyarwanda, and English. The following proposal is only concerned with short courses in English. The CLE will use the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as a reference tool in both the preparation and delivery of short courses in order to help learners reach international standards of proficiency. All these courses will be tailored to clients/learners needs and/or levels of proficiency. The following table indicates the levels of proficiency and the amount of class time needed to reach each level. The information in this table is based on the proficiency benchmark of the Common European Framework of reference for Languages (CEFR) (Cambridge University Press, 2013, pp.2- 4), and will be used to guide the preparation and delivery of short courses in English.
