Why do we Internationalize

Academic institutions across the globe are redefining their respective roles and contributions to the knowledge society, beginning with a supportive environment and educational experience that prepare students to be citizens of multicultural communities both close to home and far away.

Appropriate funding of research that maximises impact on the lives of the poorest among us, raising expectations and life chances for our young people, and addressing issues of our time such as climate damage, Black Lives Matter, digital access for people with disabilities, rights for girls and womxn, and issues of decolonisation of content and pedagogy, UR has the responsibility to develop strong, collaborative knowledge partnerships that enhance capacity in both teaching and research.

Through participation in the regional and global landscapes of scholarship, academic exchange and collaborative research UR seeks to uphold the spirit of free critical thought and enquiry by going beyond tolerance of diversity of beliefs and understanding, while fostering open exchange of ideas and knowledge amongst staff and students.

Like other universities UR needs to internationalize to increase international awareness and deeper engagement with global issues by students and staff, to enhance internationalization of the curriculum, improve quality of teaching and learning, and strengthen institutional research and knowledge production as well as contributing to reshaping Rwanda as a genuine knowledge-based economy.
