The Department may set its own higher entry requirements for the program

The Material Science program allows the understanding of the connection between the structure of various materials (including metal, ceramics, polymer and composites), their properties, processing techniques and their performance in applications. The program focuses emphasis on materials for renewable energy and environmental sustainability. Acquired skills in material science could be applied in various industries including ceramics industries (such as cement brick, tiles industries), plastic industries, paint industries, mineral industries, metal processing industries, composites industries, etc.

The study of Material will help Rwanda develop manufacturing industries and improve health standards of living for people in Rwanda, as well as accelerating economic development both in rural and urban areas.

Students who successfully go through these programs can also pursue postgraduate studies in a wide array of Physics and Engineering disciplines including Biophysics, Astronomy, Radiation Physics, material science and engineering, renewable energy, environmental engineering, climate science, atmospheric physics, etc.
