Background

A crucial decision to explore establishment of a Center of Excellence in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management (CoEB) was made in 2007 when His Excellency the President of the Republic of Rwanda Paul Kagame spoke at the First International Conference on Biodiversity and Sustainable Resource Management in Kigali, Rwanda. He emphasized the importance of biodiversity for the country’s national development and the need for knowledge-based approaches to sustainable management of biodiversity and natural resources in the Albertine Rift region. The Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Rwanda Development Board has led the establishment of the CoEB with support from UNESCO and UNECA through the One UN budget in Rwanda. The CoEB is a network composed of Nodes made up of research institutions, higher learning institutions, and NGOs with a central coordinating Hub hosted at University of Rwanda (UR). The UR was selected as hub for its status as a governmental academic institution which can network and collaborate with all nodes in support of current and future biodiversity and natural resources management initiatives. The CoEB will coordinate biodiversity and natural resources management efforts in Rwanda by collaborating, networking and supporting governmental and non-governmental institutions and organizations (its nodes). The mission of the CoEB is to enhance knowledge of biodiversity and natural resource management for sustainable development. The goal is to encourage, enable and support stakeholders to generate and apply knowledge on biodiversity and natural resources for sustainable development. The CoEB will contribute to science-driven management to meet Rwanda’s green growth, climate adaptation and sustainable development goals through biodiversity research and monitoring, education and awareness raising, bioprospecting and biodiversity informatics.
