The University of Rwanda partners with AVU to increase access to education through e-Learning

The University of Rwanda in collaboration with the African Virtual University (AVU) officially launched the Center of Open Distance and e-Learning (ODeL). The centre aims at alleviating access to education to a wider population through the use of ICT.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Phil Cotton the University of Rwanda Vice Chancellor hailed the efforts of all actors involved in the setup of ODeL Centre. He added that the centre is poised to influence the existing pedagogical approaches at the University and hence boosting lecturers’ role to inspire the new generation.

In his remarks Dr Bakary Diallo the Rector of AVU noted that the initiative is driven by desire to prepare the African learners and professionals to better contribute to the socio-economic development of the continent. He added that AVU’s role is to ensure that people have access to the 21st Century skills that they will need to advance themselves and the continent.

Dr Nduwingoma Mathias is the Director of ODeL Centre of African Virtual University at the University of Rwanda. He noted that the centre seeks to increase access to education for many Rwandans. According to him, UR is underlining the vision of the Government of Rwanda of being a knowledge based economy while transforming the country into an ICT hub for the region; Nduwingoma said.

This event brought together among others AVU, UR top officials, representative of AfDB as the project funding agency and other key institutions and individuals who have a stake in online and Distance Education. It also featured delivery workshops meant to review the roles and responsibilities of the Partner Institution and ensure that the AVU Multinational Project programs are well integrated in the institution.

Established in 1997, African Virtual University (AVU) is a Pan African Intergovernmental Organization with a mandate to significantly increase access to quality higher education and training through the innovative use of Information and Communication Technologies. The main purpose of the ODeL Centre is to act as a physical hub for the creation, organization and sharing of knowledge and the development of ODeL Programs.
