Final year students infectious diseases management training

Background

The One Health Workforce (OHW) project is developing a health workforce that is prepared to prevent, detect and respond to the threat of infectious diseases around the world. The project is part of the United States Agency for international Development (USAID)

Emerging Pandemic Threats 2 (EPT2) program, which focuses on cross-sectoral diseases surveillance, training, and outbreak response.

Teams at the University of Minnesota (Project Lead) and Tufts University provide support for two regional university networks, the One Health Central and Eastern Africa (OHCEA) network and the Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN).

OHW is able to leverage these established university networks to create a sustainable transformation in the regions’ health workforce.

Recent and on-going threats have showcased a critical need for health workers that are prepared to manage diseases that cross human, animal, and environmental health sectors. The 2014 emergency of the Ebola virus in West Africa posed a global threat to human and animal health as well as national security and economic prosperity.

Epidemics of that nature and magnitude call for a workforce that not only has the technical skills and competencies to work well within their own disciplines and sector but also possess the skills to effectively and efficiently work across sectors and disciplines to manage an infectious disease outbreak on a global scale.

Infectious Diseases Management (IDM) Course

The course is a comprehensive holistic strategy to equip our final year students from different programs of the University of Rwanda (UR) and Global Health Equity University (UGHE) with knowledge and skills on detection, prevention and response to infectious disease outbreaks. Discipline are not only limited to medical courses like Human Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Nursing but also other non-medical courses like Business, Agriculture, Engineering and others.

We are building on 2016’s success where we pioneered this course and trained 150 final year students from the University of Rwanda and the University of Global Health Equity This time round, 120 final year students from the different disciplines are invited for the same training for one week at the University of Rwanda, Nyagatare Campus. The ultimate goal will be to create a critical mass of professionals who have capacity to work in a multi-disciplinary manner with the one health concept in mind.

Overall objective :

To equip final year students the basic principles of prevention, detection, and response to infectious disease outbreaks in the context of One Health

Specific objectives :

1. Apply multi-disciplinary approaches to infectious disease investigation and response
2. Explain the relationship between humans, animals and the environment in infectious disease transmission
3. Understand the role of surveillance in infectious disease management

Invitation of students :

We are issuing this call for application ; interested final year students from different programs of the University of Rwanda and UGHE across different campuses are invited to apply to attend this training. The one-week training will take place at Nyagatare campus starting from 24/Feb-01 March, 2019

Training facilitations :

Selected students are expected to arrive in the evening of Sunday 24th February and depart on the 1st March 2019 after the training.

OHCEA will facilitate the students with transport, accommodation and feeding.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Review of eligible applications will follow the criteria listed below :

1. Being a final year student at University of Rwanda
2. Recommendation letter from the department
3. Personal interest and motivation (between 100- 300 words) to promote one health approach :

Motivation letter including ;

• Clear explanation of how the activity would result in an innovation, demonstration of the ability to create effective and dynamic

multidisciplinary student teams.

• The technical soundness of motivation letter, the clarity and rationale for the stated objective of the activity.
• Indicate tangible plan to provide feedback to OHCEA on lessons learned, connections made and student experiences at the end of

the activity.

IMPORTANT DATES

21st January to 08th February 2019 : Students submit the applications (Application Deadline)

09th to 10 February 2019 : Review of applications

11th February 2019 : Announce the list of successful applicants

24th February 2019 : Arrival of training participants

25th February 2019 : Kick off the training

1st March 2019 : End of the training
