Leeds Beckett University and Rushmore Business School have been awarded funding for five Commonwealth Distance Learning scholarships for students to study MSc Responsible Tourism Management.

Students will be taught through a combination of online learning and face-to-face teaching at the RBS campus in Rwanda. The course is the only Responsible Tourism Management course in the world certified by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) TedQual programme. It is rated 5 stars in QS World University Rankings and delivers an applied and holistic understanding of the tourism industry.

Lucy McCombes, Senior Lecturer in the School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management at Leeds Beckett, said : “Within the travel and tourism industry, there is an increasing focus on the need to adopt responsible business practices that improve the quality of life for communities and conserve the environment and local cultures. This course helps meet the resulting demand for managers with the ability to implement responsible strategies within marketing, operations and product development.”

The course is aimed at early to mid-career tourism professionals who will be able to study part-time over three years.

Lucy added : “We are now recruiting five high-quality postgraduate students who are citizens of Rwanda, Kenya or Tanzania who wish to access training not available in their home countries, or need to remain in their home country while they study. They will have the potential to enhance the development of their home countries with the knowledge and leadership skills they acquire.”

Scholarships include all tuition fees, fieldtrips and the cost of flights for those students selected from outside of Rwanda.

The places are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, supporting excellence in UK higher education, and sustaining the principles of the Commonwealth.

The deadline for scholarship applications is noon on Friday 22 March 2019 via the Commonwealth online application system. For further information and how to apply visit : http://cscuk.dfid.gov.uk/apply/distance-learning/.
