
Projects’ Principal Investigators hailed for their role in advancing the University

Hundreds of Principal Investigators (PIs) and staff involved in various projects at UR convened with the University’s management to reflect on achievements over the past years. All these projects are coordinated under the Single Project Implementation Unit (SPIU), a dedicated portfolio designed to ensure seamless implementation and reporting of planned activities.

Presiding over the event, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kayihura Didas, commended the Principal Investigators and support staff for their unwavering dedication to making the University a transformative and resilient institution. He urged them to remain actively engaged in research and innovation that directly benefit the community, emphasizing the need to align their efforts with Rwanda’s National Strategy for Transformation (NST).

In his address, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Strategic Planning and Administration, Dr. Raymond Ndikumana, highlighted the substantial contributions of UR projects to societal transformation and high-value job creation. He stressed the importance of strategically aligning projects with NST and Vision 2050 from the initial design phase through to implementation and dissemination.
Since 2017, the University of Rwanda has overseen 349 projects
“This alignment strengthens UR’s position among Africa’s leading universities and supports Rwanda’s aspiration to become a regional hub for higher education,” Ndikumana noted.
Since 2017, the University of Rwanda has overseen 349 projects, involving a total of 3,114 staff. Over the span of seven years, 2,496 students have benefited from sponsorships funded through these projects, which have significantly enhanced their academic and professional prospects.
Projects play a catalytic role in enabling the University to achieve its strategic mandate as a hub of knowledge and a driver of societal transformation. Through these projects, UR not only advances research and innovation but also contributes significantly to addressing national and regional development challenges.
The event also served as a platform for Principal Investigators to share insights, challenges, and best practices, reinforcing a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. As UR continues to strengthen its project portfolio, the institution reaffirms its commitment to advancing research, innovation, and education to drive impactful change in Rwanda and beyond.
