The University of Rwanda (UR) has achieved a remarkable milestone, securing 6th place among universities in Sub-Saharan Africa in the Times Higher Education 2024 rankings. This achievement marks UR’s first appearance in these prestigious rankings and is a powerful testament to the university’s ongoing academic progress and growth in key areas such as teaching, research, and societal impact.
This accomplishment reflects UR’s outstanding performance in several critical areas, including resources and finance, access and fairness, student engagement, ethical leadership, and Africa impact. These pillars are essential indicators of a university’s overall strength and performance.
UR’s achievements in these areas highlight a sustained commitment to excellence and a holistic approach to academic and institutional development. The rankings are informed by over 23,000 survey responses collected across Sub-Saharan Africa, evaluating the institutions based on criteria that matter most to the academic and wider community.
The University of Rwanda’s ranking as the 6th best institution in Sub-Saharan Africa is just the beginning. This accomplishment is not an endpoint but the beginning of even greater aspirations. UR remains dedicated to fostering innovation, ensuring fairness, and making a positive impact across Africa. The university’s goal is to continue its growth and influence both regionally and globally.
The Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) Rankings, now in its second year, assess universities on their teaching, research, and societal contributions. For 2024, the methodology was updated to enhance the comparability of institutions. The rankings now consider five pillars : resources and finance, access and fairness, student engagement, ethical leadership (a new addition), and Africa impact. This comprehensive approach ensures that universities are evaluated on a diverse range of factors, each critical to their success and relevance in the global academic landscape.
The University of Rwanda’s strong performance in these areas underscores its commitment to fostering a fair, ethical, and impactful academic environment. As the university continues to build on this achievement, it is poised for even greater accomplishments in the future.
